Question I: Graphical Summarization of Qualitative Data
Download the file 'tvshows.xls' for this question.
In 2004, the top four primetime TV shows were CSI, ER, Everybody loves Raymond,
and Friends. Data in the file indicate the preferred show by a sample of 50
viewers.
1a. Compute the frequency distribution of the TVshow variable.
b. On the basis of the sample, which TV show had the largest
viewing audience in 2004? Which one was second?
2a. Construct a bar chart and label the graph as follows: Title,
horizontal axis, vertical axis, and show the frequencies outside the bars.
b. Use the graph to further justify/explain your answer to part 1b above.
3a. Construct a pie chart and label the graph as follows: Title, and show
the frequencies outside the slices.
b. Use the pie graph to further justify/explain your answer to
part 1b above.
Question 2: Graphical & Numerical Summarization of Quantitative Data
Download the file 'ncbirths.xls' for this question. Use the age of mothers (agem)
data provided in the Sheet named "agem for HW1".
1a. Use the following class intervals to compute the frequency
distribution of the agem variable:
15 - 19
20 - 24
25 - 29
30 - 34
35 - 39
40 - 44
45 - 49
b. How many mothers were 19 years old or younger?
c. Most of the mothers were how many years old? Explain/justify your
answer.
d. How many mothers were at least 35 years old? Explain/justify your answer.
2a. Use the HISTOGRAM command to construct the histogram of the agem
an label your graphs as follows: Title, horizontal axis, vertical axis, and show
the frequencies outside the connected bars.
b. Replace the Bin (Upper Limit) values on the horizontal axis with their
corresponding class intervals in 1a above.
c. What type of skewness does the histogram exhibit? Why?
d. What is the practical significance of this type of skewness?
3. Use the DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS command to compute the
following summary statistics for the agem variable:
a. mean; interpret its meaning.
b. median; interpret its meaning.
c. mode; interpret its meaning.
d. standard deviation
4. From the results in part 3 above,
a. what is the Z-score for the maximum value of the agem?
b. what is the Z-score for the minimum value of the agem?
c. Based on the Z-scores from 'a' and 'b', does the data contain any
outliers? What is the social significance of your findings.
